Camille's Primary Ideas: To Think About Jesus Singing Time Lesson Plan Idea using sign language
I wanted to teach this song in sign language but when I went to the church’s signing website to learn it, it wasn’t there so I improvised. I’m no signing expert so I apologize now to the signing community!

Prep:
1. Bring 3 pictures found in the GAK (Gospel Art Kit) that can be searched and downloaded HERE:

  • The Crucifixion GAK #230
  • Jesus Praying in Gethsemane GAK #227
  • Christ and Children from Around the World GAK #608

2. Learn the sign language/simplified ASL to these key words (below are my notes that can also be downloaded and printed using my access button at the bottom of this post):

  • Not (for shouldn’t) – shake your head like “no,” left hand in a fist with thumb extended, bring it out from your chin
  • Hard – make the “H” sign (first 2 fingers extended, thumb holds the other 2) with left hand and make a fist with the right. Hit fists together
  • Sit – forefinger and middle fingers extended on both hands, thumb holding the other 2, and cross them together like the left finger are sitting on the right
  • Think – left hand circles temple but doesn’t touch it
  • Jesus – middle finger of the left hand touches the palm of the right and then the middle finger of the right hand touches the palm of the left
  • Cross – left hand is in cupping shape facing out, make a cross shape going down first then across right to left
  • Pain (for suffered) – forefingers extended but curved like a hook then twist hand sin opposite directions, not touching
  • Me – point to chest with left hand
  • Not (for shouldn’t) – shake your head like “no,” left hand in a fist with thumb extended, bring it out from your chin
  • Hard – make the “H” sign (first 2 fingers extended, thumb holds the other 2) with left hand and make a fist with the right. Hit fists together
  • Sit – forefinger and middle fingers extended on both hands, thumb holding the other 2, and cross them together like the left finger are sitting on the right
  • Not (for shouldn’t) – shake your head like “no,” left hand in a fist with thumb extended, bring it out from your chin
  • Hard – make the “H” sign (first 2 fingers extended, thumb holds the other 2) with left hand and make a fist with the right. Hit fists together
  • Children (for small) – both hands at chest level, palms open and facing down, “patting” motion starting in the middle and going outward
  • Think – left hand circles temple but doesn’t touch it
  • Jesus – middle finger of the left hand touches the palm of the right and then the middle finger of the right hand touches the palm of the left
  • Not – shake your head like “no,” left hand in a fist with thumb extended, bring it out from your chin
  • Hard – make the “H” sign (first 2 fingers extended, thumb holds the other 2) with left hand and make a fist with the right. Hit fists together
  • All – left hand in fist near right shoulder. Then make an “L” shape with forefinger and thumb and cross your body

I have a post HERE that goes more in depth about teaching sign language in singing time.
