Compare the hymn, Praise to the Man, to that of Scotland the Brave! Your Primary will be astounded by their similarities and enjoy learning more about bagpipes with this singing time idea!
Most of this singing time lesson plan for Praise to the Man is taken from Pat Graham’s workshop a few months ago. I’ve simply modified a few things.
Praise to the Man Singing Time Idea
Have the children watch these 2 videos in singing time, in this order:
Scotland the Brave by The Drums & Pipes & the Cape Town Highlanders from their Scotland the Brave album. Ask them if they know what the name of the instrument being played is [bagpipes].
Afterwards, display a picture of a bagpiper:

Then ask if they recognize the tune of the song. If still not (hopefully this will be the case), then have them watch Praise to the Man by the Tabernacle Choir:
Post a picture of Joseph Smith found on the Church’s website. Or it’s also found in the Gospel Art Book.
Susan Fitch also has several WONDERFUL versions of Joseph Smith in her Etsy shop. The one pictured below is from her Follow the Prophet kit. But she has other variations of him HERE and HERE.
Explain to the Primary that the tune to this hymn is similar to the bagpipe song.
Briefly give a little history about how this song came about. Wikipedia has a little info:
Praise to the Man” (originally titled “Joseph Smith“) was a poem written as a tribute to Joseph Smith, Jr. by Latter Day Saint leader and hymn writer William W. Phelps.
The poem was composed soon after Smith’s death, and was later set to music and adopted as a hymn of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
It was first published anonymously in the church newspaper Times and Seasons in August 1844, approximately one month after Smith was killed.[1]
The LDS hymnal now uses a melody based on “Scotland the Brave” in honor of Phelps’s Scottish heritage. The tune is modified to match the syllable count of the text.”
Pull out the hymnbooks and sing through the 1st and 3rd verses.
TIP: Even though Jr. Primary can’t read, they will still enjoy holding a Hymnbook.
Have them all stand and try to sing and act like the Mormon Choir Tabernacle Choir.
