The Primary song Fathers is about the various fathers in our lives.  Including the most important one – Heavenly Father!  You’ll love teaching Fathers using this singing time lesson plan.

Fathers Singing Time Idea

For this activity, you will be creating this diagram on the board:

Camille's Primary Ideas: Fathers Primary Singing Time Ideas

Write the word “fathers” in the middle of the board and circle it.

Tell the Primary that fathers are so special, they bless our lives by protecting us and teaching us the best way to live. We have many fathers.

One type of father is our earthly father. Write “earthly father” on the upper-left hand side of the board.  Then draw a line from “fathers” to “earthly fathers.”

Another father is our Heavenly Father.  Write “Heavenly Father” in the upper-right hand side of the board. Then draw a line from “fathers” to “Heavenly Father.”

Another father is our bishop.  He is often called the father of our ward.  Write “bishop” on the upper-middle portion of the board.

Repeat with any other types of fathers children can come up with including:

  • grandfathers
  • step-fathers
  • the father of our country (George Washington for those in the United States)
  • etc.

Write these suggestions around the word “fathers” (they will eventually be erased and you want the 3 left on the top to be “earthly fathers,” “bishop” and “Heavenly Father.”

Have the children listen to the song as you and the teachers sing with the piano.  Post the words as needed using this flip chart format.

Ask which of these fathers are listed in the song. Erase the others not mentioned.  Then erase the word “fathers.”

Draw 3 vertical lines dividing the board into 3 sections, one for each verse with the headings of each already written like this:

Quickly teach the chorus by having children come to the front and holding the following items:

  • “special” badge and a clothes pin: “Fathers are so special with a very special love”
  • sun glasses: “They watch us”
  • helmet and/or knee pads: “and protect us”
  • flashlight: “they guide us”
  • Conductor stick or dowel: “and direct us”

Then for “back to our home above,” helpers take a step back and look up. Rotate children up front each time you sing the chorus with each verse.

Teach verses by gradually adding the flip chart pages onto board in designated sections. Time permitting remove pages as lines are learned.

Bear Testimony

My father, my bishop, and my Heavenly Father all love me. These special fathers protect us and guide us so that we can live with our Heavenly Father one day.

  2. Camille, I was searching around last week and found a post with a drawing of Dad and then interchangeable ties that have different songs listed on the back. I could have sworn this was you but now I can't find it. Do you have any idea who this might have been? Any help would be great. Thanks
