Footsteps & Calling Cards

To create your cake walk, you need enough footsteps for each Primary child to be able to stand on one.

Access these printables at my Resource Library.  Instructions for accessing the Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post.

Print on various colors of card stock to create a colorful look!  Number your footsteps using a sharpie marker, then laminate and cut out.

Then you need some calling cards.  These are numbered up to 26.  If you need more, you are on your own ;).

Again, access these printables at my Resource Library.

Print on card stock, laminate and cut out.  Then place in a bag, box or jar.

Singing Time Cake Walk

Place numbered footsteps for each Primary child out randomly around the room in a large circle.  Have all the kids go stand on a footstep.

Have everyone sing Primary Children. Sang As They Walked.  Post the words like I do HERE if needed.

Camille's Primary Ideas: posting words for singing time, singing time flip charts

Have the piano randomly stop.  Call out a number and the child standing on that number must tell you the rest of the line in the song before they can get a treat.   It encourages a little more singing this way ;).  If they answer correctly, they receive a piece of “pioneer” candy.

Obviously with Jr. Primary be very lenient and hopefully the rest of the Primary can even help them out.

WARNING:  If you do this activity, things will probably get a little rowdy and expect the kids not to sing much.  But honestly, it’s summer and I’m okay with this once in a while!

I opted for salt water taffy as a treat but anything will work!  Afterward, put the calling card back into the bag and repeat until all the kids have had a piece of candy and your song has been sung SEVERAL times!

If the kids think they did a lot of walking, tell them the pioneer children walked thousands of miles to get to the Salt Lake Valley!

Cake Walk Variations

I have used a cake walk while singing other pioneer Primary songs too!  Find more details HERE.

You can also incorporate a cake walk into a joint pioneer sharing/singing time (perfect for a 5th  Sunday or Primary summer activity) HERE

Chime Chart

This pioneer Primary song is a CLASSIC!  I personally knew the author!  She was in my ward growing up and was blind.  Just a really neat lady!

I remember her playing it on the piano complaining that everyone played it too slowly.  To her, when pioneer children walked, they didn’t do it drudgingly, but joyously and the song should have a similar feel.

This chime chart uses chording.  The 3 notes in the box play at the exact same time.  And they play on the word (or part of the word) that is listed in the lower righthand corner.

  1. I did this today and the kids loved it. We have a large primary, around 40 attending in each junior and senior. I had planned on using multiple pioneer songs, but just ended up singing Pioneer Children Sang As They Walked the whole time. I gave out salt water taffy for a prize. I picked three numbers each time we stopped the music.

    1. Thank you for just making my day with your comment, Bonnie!! It brought a big smile to my face and I really appreciate the feedback!
