What SHAPE are our SONGS in?

I really liked what Wendy posted on Primary Music Leaders Facebook group which was “What Shape Are Our Songs In?”  to help review for our primary program.  If you are a member of the group, you can find the original posting HERE.

Here’s my take on it:

I just quickly made up a poster board.  I kind of goofed on the title of each of the 4 columns with the marker so I covered them up with something I typed up.  You can find those and the shapes to cut out using the access button at the bottom of this page.  Page one is printed on white card stock and each page is printed on a different color of card stock.  I laminated all of the shapes.

An after thought, but I should have had the whole poster laminated before writing the song names and then typed up each song name and just stuck them on with tape or plasty-tac. That way I could reuse it every year.  But, I have a pregnant brain lately so oh well.  I’ll use plasty-tac to keep the shapes in place.

I should also have made 2 boards for each Jr. Sr. but I’m too lazy to make another one so I’m just going to quickly jot down where each primary is each week and put it all back together before each singing time.

I looked at my calendar and with Stake Conference this month and General Conference next month, we have 6 weeks to practice our program.  2 of those weeks we will be running through the whole program, parts and all, so I don’t need to plan singing time for those weeks.  So I have 4 weeks to review our 9 songs.

I’m going to use this board for the next 4 weeks.  I may try to rig it so we get all stars on the last day or our program reviewing and then I’ll bring treats for completing the poster, after the program. Still figuring out a treat – maybe starbursts for the “stars!”

  1. The picture is what I was going to suggest too:) Creative minds think alike:)
Thanks for spreading the word about this great idea. Its so hard to keep them interested in singing the same songs over and over and over. I was trying to come up with something that would create a kind of goal with a reward and this is so perfect. Praise to Wendy for coming up with this cute idea! thank you!

  2. THANK YOU for sharing your amazing ideas. You are an incredible chorister, and are blessing the lives of Primary children all over the world!!

  3. I love this idea and I will be using it. I just have a question. How did you determine each shape in their singing? Did you have someone beside yourself determine what shape it was? And does the whole board need to be filled for the treat or would you just go straight for a star on a song they knew really well?

    1. What I ended up doing was after the song was sung, I had the kids hold up fingers 1-4 to determine what they thought appropriate. Usually they'd say 4 for a star and then I'd to through the list of how they earned a star – Was everyone singing? Were everyone's eyes on me? Did we use the words? Was anyone being wiggly? etc. Then if I disagreed with them I'd decide what shape they earned and maybe get a little input from the teachers and presidency. I then drew children's names to come put the shapes on the poster. Some songs earned a straight star and others didn't. I kind of rigged it but there were ones I definitely knew needed work and ones I know that they knew.

I hope that answered your questions!

  4. Love this idea! I'm going to make one poster- put the Jr. on the front and the SR on the back. And keep it in the Primary closet so I don't have to haul it around. 🙂
