The 2nd and 3rd verses of the primary song Baptism focus on why we get baptized.  This singing time lesson plan helps convey that message to your primary during singing time!

Camille's Primary Ideas: Baptism Singing Time Ideas

Find the lesson plan for the 1st verse HERE that introduces the t-shirts with the 5 other question words.

Quickly review the first verse by simply flipping through the 5 “answer” pictures/keywords.

Then for the 2nd verse you need a “Why” t-shirt.  It’s easy to use the “Who” t-shirt and simply move the “O” blue tape around.

Baptism Wands

Wands help provide added movement as you teach Baptism.  They also are great to resemble water which is necessary for baptism.  You will need enough wands for each child to have one.

Wand Position Cards

In conjunction with the wands, you will need these Wand Position Cards.

Senior Primary

For Senior Primary, have the words to the 2nd and 3rd verses written on the board.  Put the “Why” t-shirt on and inform the kids that the 2nd and 3rd verse of Baptism talks all about WHY we get baptized.  Sing the verses together and have the kids find these 4 answers as to why we get baptized:

  1. To fulfill the law
  2. To enter with my Father In the kingdom up on high.
  3. Witness faith in Jesus’ word,
  4. Be baptized to show obedience, As was Jesus Christ, our Lord

Then pass out a wand to each child.  Hold up the position cards and flip through them as you sing each phrase or so.

After each time you sing, call a few kids up (enough so everyone will get a turn) to erase maybe 2 words each.  Repeat again with the wand cards and new children to erase more words until all the children have had a turn and the words have all been erased.
TIP: If your primary is combined, cater to the older children.  The younger ones will pick up what they can and the older ones can help the younger children as needed.

Junior Primary

Review the 1st verse with the 5 answer sheets.  Then put on the “Why” t-shirt and ask the kids to listen for why we get baptized as you and the teachers sing the 2nd and 3rd verses:

  1. To fulfill the law
  2. To enter with my Father In the kingdom up on high.
  3. Witness faith in Jesus’ word,
  4. Be baptized to show obedience, As was Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Then pass out ribbon wands and assign each phrase a “Wand Position Card.” Sing each phrase using one action.  Hang that card on the board and then add on for each phrase

  1. Thank you so much for this idea. I did the 1st verse last week with the T-Shirts and it was a very fun way of learning the song. Looking forward to the other verses. Thank you for sharing your talent!

    1. Hi Heather!

They are filed in my Resource Library under Song Title > Baptism. I updated the post to make that more clear. Thank you for the feedback!
