Celebrate back to school with this school themed singing time activity!  All you need are some school supplies and a list of songs to sing.

I’ll be using 8 school supply items for our 8 program songs this year.  See details on the activity HERE.

Below is my updated version which includes all of this year’s songs.  You can download my simple document at my Resource Library.  Instructions for accessing my Resource Library can be found at the bottom of this post.

  • GLUE – Glue your legs together and your arms to your sides so you hold really still while we sing He Sent His Son.

  • SCISSORS – Sing I Will Follow God’s Plan as if you were cutting it (sing it staccato or choppy).

  • MARKERS – Only sing The Family is of God when you are wearing the same color as the marker that is held up.

  • RULER – Measure the volume as we sing I Stand All Amazed. Point to 1 inch for softer up to 12 inches for louder.

  • ERASER – “Erase” (don’t sing) the phrase “Keep the Commandments” in the song Keep the Commandments.

  • SHARPENER – Sharpen the song by enunciating each word in Family History – I am Doing It.

  • CALCULATOR – Calculate how many “B” words are in Baptism.  What words are they?

  • PENCIL – Write with your hands by making up actions as we sing Seek the Lord Early.
VARIATION: If I had the whole time I’d throw in some extra items (tape, stapler, notebook, pen, staple remover, sticky notepad, 3-hole punch, etc.) so more kids could have a chance to find things, then attach some wiggle songs to them.

Check out this quick tutorial video for accessing the Resource Library:

  1. What a cute idea:
I would maybe use the family is of god for erasing words; erase family and children.
He Sent His Son for gluing.
I Stand All Amazed for measuring the volume
I think you could do some writing type actions for Seek the Lord Early (hand on forehead like you are looking for seek, point to temple for truth, hold hands put in a book for search the scriptures, fold arms for prayers, hand behind ear for obey the living prophets in all the say, cross arms over body for love)
We were learning Follow the Prophet for one of our choices so that would be a good one for us for the scissors
We also did I Love to See the Temple so I think I'll use that one for sharpen.
count the word Baptist/baptized/baptism in Baptism.

  2. I like Tonya's suggestions. I did a few different songs though. Here is what I am thinking:
ERASER: “Erase" (don’t sing) the words family and children in the song. Family is of God outline

GLUE: Glue your legs together and your arms to your sides so you hold really still while we sing He Sent His Son p. 34

MARKERS: Only sing I Will Follow God's Plan p. 164 when you are wearing the same color as the marker that is held up.

RULER: Measure the volume as we sing I Stand All Amazed Hymn 193. Point to 1 inch for softer up to 12 inches for louder.

CALCULATOR: Count how many times we sing the words Baptist/baptized/baptism in Baptism p. 100. (Write the words on the board)

PENCIL: Write with your hands (sign language) to the song Build an Ak, Friend

SCISSORS: Sing The Priesthood is Restored p. 89 legato (smoothly) as if it were a piece of paper for the verse. Then when we sing second time or the bugle sounds, cut it up by singing staccato (choppy).

SHARPENER: Sharpen the song by enunciating each word for Seek the Lord Early p. 108. May have them speak the words as the pianist plays once through and sharpen each word and then enunciate with singing.

  3. LOVE your ideas!!! :0) Here are the songs we are doing & how I'm using your ideas:

GLUE – Glue your legs together and your arms to your sides so you hold really still while we sing "He Sent His Son".

SCISSORS: Sing "I Will Follow God’s Plan" with "cutting" motions ( we learned this one using the paper plates, so the motions fit)

MARKERS – Only sing "The Family is of God" when you are wearing the same color as the marker that is held up.

RULER – Measure the volume as we sing "I Stand All Amazed". Point to 1 inch for softer up to 12 inches for louder.

ERASER – “Erase” (don’t sing but shake head "yes") for the words "build", "ark", "I will", "I can" while singing "Build An Ark"

STAPLER – "staple" the beat to the song "Family History – I am Doing It" like connecting families together.

CALCULATOR: Calculate how many things we "seek" and "find" in "Seek the Lord Early". What are they?

PENCIL: Write with your hands by doing actions as we sing "Baptism"(our Jr group created their own actions, so we are using those)

  4. tape, stapler, notebook, pen, staple remover, sticky notepad, 3-hole punch
I've got an extra long music time this coming sunday and I wanna do this so I'm thinking of adding more of these to the school bad, what do you think are some good action ideas for these extra items?

  5. Thanks for the ideas! I just found out I am being released, 🙁 But wanted to say thanks and I have used so many of your ideas and they helped me so much. I thought it would be fun with this activity (if you had the whole time) to also add a notebook of paper – they could write their favorite song on a sheet, make it into a paper airplane and fly it to the chorister.

  6. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas! Here is what our Primary will be doing with your Back to School idea tomorrow:
CALCULATOR: Calculate how many “B” words are in “Baptism” p. 100. What words are they?
ERASER – “Erase” (don’t sing) the word “we” in the song “We'll Bring the World His Truth” p. 172.
GLUE – Glue your legs together and your arms to your sides so you hold really still while we sing “He Sent His Son” p.34.
HIGHLIGHTER – Highlight by singing louder the phrase “seek the Lord early” in “Seek the Lord Early” p. 108.
MARKERS – Only sing “The Family is of God” when you are wearing the same color as the marker that is held up.
PENCIL: We will "write" our own song as we sing "Do As I’m Doing" (p. 276).
RULER – Measure the volume as we sing “I Stand All Amazed” p. 193. Point to 1 inch for softer up to 12 inches for louder.
SCISSORS: Sing “I Will Follow God’s Plan” p. 164 as if you were cutting it (sing it staccato or choppy).
SHARPENER – Sharpen the song by enunciating each word in “Families Can Be Together Forever” p. 188.
