April is a “your choice” song! To pick my April song, I looked at April’s theme for the month and started from there (it helps our program jive a little better). I also kept Easter in mind when deciding. We almost always sing April’s song for Easter in sacrament meeting. April’s theme is “Jesus Christ Teaches Me to Choose the Right.” Here are my suggestions (which I picked from section 2, The Savior, in the Children’s Songbook!):
- He Sent His Son . 34 (find my lesson plan HERE)**
- I Think When I Read That Sweet Story p. 56
- Tell Me the Stories of Jesus p. 57 (find my lesson plan HERE)
- Beautiful Savior p. 62 (find my lesson plan HERE)
- I Feel My Savior’s Love p. 74
- This Is My Beloved Son p. 76 (find my lesson plan HERE)
- I’m Trying to Be like Jesus p. 78 (find my lesson plan HERE)
- Had I Been a Child p. 80 (find my lesson plan HERE)
- When He Comes Again p. 82 (find my lesson plan HERE) – this is what I chose this year
**There is also a “Helps for the music leader” section for this song in the 2017 Outline on pg. 9:
For ideas for teaching the songs where I don’t have a lesson plan linked (or if you chose something different), I’d reference the following:
A Children’s Songbook Companion. Find details of this book HERE.
Sugardoodle HERE and search for the song alphabetically.
Then there’s the obvious Google, Pinterest, Facebook (Chorister’s Group HERE), or other singing time blogs – I have several linked to the right and scroll down

If the Savior Stood Beside Me
In the April 1984 Friend Magazine there is a song called "Easter Song" , that I love. I wish I could get my chorister to teach it. Perhaps someone else would be interested in using it.
I chose "Choose the Right Way" for my song this month.
I'm actually teaching "Book of Mormon Stories" focusing on the last verse about Christ. My primary presidency really felt like we needed to learn all the verses this year. I was just called and started my calling the very first of the year. I was super excited because the children know most of the songs for the program this year already, so I thought it would be fun to just learn the verses to "Book of Mormon Stories" since my 11 year old didn't even know there were extra verses. So in January I taught about Abinadi and the presidency was amazed because they had just decided it that week but hadn't told me yet! The past few weeks we have already been learning "Beautiful Savior" to sing in Sacrament meeting on Easter Sunday. I decided to also do "Jesus is Our Loving Friend" this month too. It is such a sweet easy melody and super easy to learn.
I'll be teaching Hosanna but I don't know how to quickly acquire some hand bells, I'd live to incorporate them if I can find some. Do you know of any stores that sell them??
Hi Yumi!
I'd recommend purchasing handbells from Amazon. They can arrive as soon as 2 days with Amazon Prime shipping. I have details on this post here:

If Amazon doesn't work, I'd try calling your local music stores. In Utah, I think Day Murray Music sells them.
I hope that helps, good luck!

I'm late! I just got called as music leader in a new ward in June and they didn't have something chosen for April yet so I just started on "Jesus Once Was a Little Child" yesterday. I thought the message of let's try to be like Jesus went with the monthly theme really well and I also know that this is a popular song among our Samoan people (of which we have a good number in our ward) so a lot of the children will be familiar with the tune already 🙂 AND i also feel it's one of those songs everyone should somewhat know once they leave primary so it's an opportunity for me to increase their familiarity with more songs because our kids don't know a good range yet – I'm on a mission to change that 😉
