Teach Me to Walk in the Light

Teach Me to Walk in the Light is one of the simpler hymns.  With not a lot of words, nor is it lengthy, it’s perfect for teaching in singing time!  Teach it utilizing footsteps and Gospel Art Book images for a perfectly simple yet effective lesson plan!

As with most hymns, I suggest teaching the 1st verse only.  A wonderful option is to have the congregation join in on the rest of the verses if you sing it in sacrament meeting!

There’s a lesson plan found in the 2005 April Friend HERE for teaching Teach. Me to Walk in the Light (scroll down to the “Song Presentation” section).  I slightly altered and my variation is below.

Print out 5 footsteps using this document:

So to clarify, print 3 copies which gives you 6 footsteps.  Omit one of them.  Print on fun colored paper if you like and cut out.

Then you need the following pictures from the Gospel Art Book (GAB) or download and print here:
  • Christ and Children from Around the World #116 HERE
  • Young Boy Praying #111 HERE
  • Missionaries: Sisters #109 HERE and/or Elders #110 HERE
  • The Second Coming #66 HERE

Before primary, tape the 5 “teach me” footsteps and 4 GAB pictures randomly under the primary chairs.

Attention Getter

Using a flashlight or finger light (see below), ask the children if it’s easier to walk in the dark or in the light and take answers.  Oftentimes, the gospel is referred to as the light.  Then ask if they would prefer to go through life with or without the light or knowledge of the gospel.  Take answers.

Have the children walk in place to the rhythm, no singing, piano only.  Point out that the rhythm (3/4 time) has a steady beat, just like walking.

Next have the children walk in place to the melody (so they only step when the notes are sung).  The melody also has a very steady beat.  You and teachers sing with the piano as you step, children can sing if they are familiar with the words.  Post words like I do HERE.

Finally, sing the song with teachers and have the children count how many times the words “teach me” are sung [5].

Have children look under their chairs for the hidden footsteps and pictures.  Have them help you put them in order on the board and sing after each picture is hung.  This is the order:

  1. Teach me
  2. Christ and Children from around the World
  3. Teach me
  4. Young Boy Praying
  5. Teach me
  6. Missionaries
  7. Teach me
  8. Teach me
  9. The Second Coming
Quickly discuss how each picture correlates to the words in the song (optionally write the key words associated with each picture underneath it).

Time permitting, gradually remove footsteps, pictures and keywords until the song has been sung several times.

Variations

  • The children can optionally stand on “teach me” and perform simple actions during each phrase (for example, walk in place, fold arms, point to head for “know,” etc.).
  • Pass out a finger light to each child and when “light” is sung, have them turn on their light and aim it at the ceiling.  More details on finger lights are HERE.
  • Place the GAB images on the board before primary.  Pass out footsteps to classes and have them work together to place their footstep on the board where a “teach me” phrase goes.
