With no new songs to teach this month and our upcoming program in October, we use September to review all the program songs we’ve learned this year.  I like to use one review activity that will last until the program.

The few weeks in October (after General Conference) leading up to the program we usually have a run-through once in the primary room and once in the chapel (which is usually a VERY quick run-through as our time in the chapel is limited on Sunday due to the other ward coming in – the kids get a turn to speak their name into the microphone, we’ll practice sitting and standing and maybe sing the second verses of all the songs because they usually need more reviewing).

I also use September to prep for other program items including a physical program to pass out during sacrament meeting the day of the primary program, an invitation for the kids to take to less-active families (which can also be attached to program parts so parents are aware of the date of the program), and getting my binder ready for leading in sacrament meeting.

You can find all my program helps HERE.  Watch for all my 2017 updates this month!

If you are lucky enough to have your program early, you can check out all my after-the-program posts HERE.  My favorite is Primary Music Memory found HERE:

Then November we focus on Thanksgiving (posts can be found HERE) and December is {obviously} Christmas (posts can be found HERE).  So there’s PLENTY to do without a monthly song to teach – which is my favorite!!

  1. Hi! I'm a brand new primary chorister and I've done tons of things with music in the ward (usually choir director), but this is my first time in the primary. I'm loving what I've seen of your blog so far. Question about your September program review, specifically about the Chews the Right activity. Is that the only activity you'd do with them every week this month? It looks like a great activity and I'd love to try it, but I'm worried that the kids would get bored with it if that's all we do every week. I have no idea though, since I've never had this calling before…

  2. Hi Charisse,

Sometimes I have mini activities that coincide with the overall review activity – I haven't decided yet what I'm doing. The activity alone will probably suffice but I may throw in some more activities related to "chews" – maybe have a child come up with actual gum balls and see how many bubbles they can blow as we sing the song or something. Sorry I don't have more details. I work about a week at a time when it comes to that.
