Teach Easter Hosanna using these interactive scarf actions.  By using scarf actions, children can relate the words to the movement in addition to understanding the flow of the song!  It’s a perfect combination!

I attended Sharla Dance’s workshops when she was in Utah.  At the workshop she demonstrated these actions:

With Sharla’s permission, I created a digital version of her hand drawn printables:

Once printed, cut in half.

Each child needs a scarf or something similar (square of light fabric, bandana, etc.).  Find more details on my favorite scarves for singing time.

Camille's Primary Ideas: Using Scarves for Movement

Before Primary, place the scarf action printables on the board.  I recommend using magnetic tape (my latest and most favorite singing time find!) to do so.   But magnets or tape do the job too!

Easter Hosanna Singing Time Ideas

Anytime you have some sort of actions, the easiest attention getter is to simply demonstrate them and have the children watch.  Make sure you and the teachers sing as you demonstrate.  Post the words using this flip chart format.

Easter Hosanna Sharla Dance

Watch Sharla’s video as she demonstrates the scarf actions (about 13:13 into the video):

These are detailed notes of the actions:

1st Verse:

  • Prophesies: hand near head (larger arrow) as if having a vision then wave scarf outward (smaller arrow) underneath other arm
  • Now at last fulfilled: infinity sign
  • Jesus: asl for Jesus (point to center of each palm)
  • To man: infinity sign
  • Came down: circle scarves in a downward spiral
  • White robed: place scarf around shoulders creating a robe
  • Glorified: create a lightning shape up toward heaven
  • People: asl for people (create a “finger person” with hands & circle)
  • Received their Lord: infinity sign

Chorus:

  • Hosanna!: toss scarf into the air
  • Blessed be the name of the most high God: slap lap with hands to rhythm (overemphasizing the larger dots)
  • Hosanna!: toss scarf into the air
  • Blessed be the name of the most high God: slap lap with hands to rhythm (overemphasizing the larger dots)

2nd Verse:

  • Jesus Christ: hand near head (larger arrow) then wave scarf outward (smaller arrow) underneath other arm as if appearing
  • Promised land: infinity sign
  • The Righteous people: asl for Jesus  (point to center of each palm)
  • And came to understand: infinity sign
  • That He once dead: circle scarves in a downward spiral
  • As Savior, Lord and king: create a lightning shape up toward heaven (twice)
  • As they rejoiced: asl for people (create a “finger person” with hands & circle)
  • And joyfully: infinity sign

After demonstrating, ask the children if they remember any of the actions and take answers.

Then pass out a scarf to each child and teach the actions.  Time permitting, gradually remove the pages from the board.

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony that you rejoice every time you read of Jesus appearing to the Nephites.

No Printer? No Problem!

This activity can EASILY be accomplished without using any printed visuals!  Just make sure you know all the actions (or jot down some simple notes for yourself).
