Help your primary interact with primary songs this week by creating a primary song challenge!  The concept is simple!  Just pick a song and create a video using it then share it with your primary!  Use songs you’ve learned so far or any primary song or hymn will work too!

Camille's Primary Ideas: Primary Song Challenge to review primary songs at home

I saw this idea HERE and absolutely loved it!  Families in your primary can share their videos on your ward FB page( if you have one) or any other means your ward has to communicate!

The best way to introduce it is to create your own video then challenge the rest of the primary (or even the ward!) to follow suit!

I suggest to have your primary use one of the songs from this year’s Music for Singing time (a list can be found HERE).  Or even more preferable is one we’ve learned so far this year.  Our primary has learned:

  • The Iron Rod (January)
  • Nephi’s Courage (February)
  • I Will Walk with Jesus (March)
  • Easter Hosanna (April)

But I am not picky!  Choose from the list or just a favorite primary song or hymn!

Then make a video any way you like!  Here are a few ideas:

  • act it out using actions or simplified ASL
  • perform a musical instrument
  • sing the song together
  • story board or puppet show
  • slideshow
  • the sky is the limit!

The Challenge:

This is what I posted on my ward’s Facebook account if you want to copy and paste:

Hi families!  I’m starting a Primary Song Challenge this week!  Simply create a video using a primary song or hymn.  You can use songs we’ve learned in primary this year, songs we will learn later this year (I’ll link all these in the comments), or just your favorite!  Share your video when you’re finished!  That’s it!  Here’s what our family came up with:

Then include the link to your video with this link HERE in the comments that contains the list of songs for 2020.

Here’s our family’s video with my own primary-aged kids and my teenagers video recording.  (And yes, I used my singing time props I already had in my files!).  It seriously took us less than 5 minutes to throw this together:

You can subscribe to my YouTube channel HERE as well!

Share your video:

If you or your primary families create videos and would like to share, let me know! Just make sure to get permission from families and email me the video or send me the YouTube link and I’ll put it all together below!  This could be REALLY fun if we get enough to participate!!

Thanks for all of your great ideas and generosity in sharing them with us. I love this idea of primary music challenge. I have been doing primary music with a video posted on our ward facebook page each week for the last 5 weeks. I prepare about 10 minutes of music for the children using props they can find at home like wooden spoons, scarves etc to teach the songs. And I’ve created a music video using my own photos of my Heavenly Father Loves Me with words on the screen to do a sing along.
