Camille's Primary Ideas: Testimony Tap (Cup Bop) Primary Singing Time Ideas

Hymns are hard to teach in singing time.  But when you add in large body movements like this cup bop activity, children don’t realize they are hearing and singing the hymn over and over again.  Instead they are focused on the activity.  It’s genius!

Testimony Cup Bop Rhythm

Everyone needs 2 cups.  The brighter the colors, the better ;).  Hold cups in both hands and upside down.

The rhythm pattern is simple!  It only contains 3 movements.  Once you learn those 3 movements repeat them 4 times throughout the duration of the song.  That’s it!

  1. Movement 1: Tap sides of cups together once
  2. Movement 2:  Tap the bottom of the left hand cup then right hand cup on top of legs.
  3. Movement 3: Quickly shake the cups back and forth using the bottom of cups on top of legs.

This cup bop. pattern is repeated 4 times in each verse:

  • The: tap sides of cups together once
  • witness of the holy: tap left cup then right to the rhythm (6 taps)
  • ghost: shake the cups back and forth as you hold this note
  • as: tap sides of cups together once
  • born by those who: tap left cup then right to the rhythm (4 taps)
  • know: shake the cups back and forth as you hold this note
  • Has: tap sides of cups together once
  • lifted me again to: tap left cup then right to the rhythm (6 taps)
  • Thee: shake the cups back and forth as you hold this note
  • Oh: tap sides of cups together once
  • Father of my: tap left cup then right to the rhythm (4 taps)
  • soul: shake the cups back and forth as you hold this note

Testimony Singing Time Idea

For this activity, demonstrate the cup bop actions as you and the teachers song.  Make sure to post the words using this flip chart format as needed.

Then pass out 2 cups to each child and have them learn the cup bop as you and the teachers continue singing.  Teach the rhythm pattern first.  Then add singing to the rhythm pattern.

Repeat until the pattern is learned and children are able to sing as well as tap.

Additional Repetition:

Try tapping softly using laps first.  Then tap loudly using the back of a chair instead of laps.  Note the difference in how the hymn sounds.

Ask how the Holy Ghost usually bears witness – softly or loudly?

Directive Listening Questions

Repeat the song again, asking these directive listening questions in between singing (questions can also be used for each subsequent verses as well):

  • What words are on the long notes [1st verse: Ghost, know, thee, soul]
What notes are repeated? [1st verse: witness, holy, lifted]
  • What word has a big jump? [1st verse: a-gain]
  • Define big words: [1st verse: witness, borne]

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony that when others bear testimony of Heavenly Father, the Savior and the prophet, the Holy Ghost bears witness to others who listen.  He testifies of the truthfulness of what has been shared.
