Children aren’t afraid to share their beliefs with others and therefore, tend to be the best member missionaries!  So make sure they recognize they are being a missionary right now by teaching I Want to Be a Missionary Now using these Primary singing time ideas.

Camille's Primary Ideas: I Want to Be a Missionary Now Singing Time Ideas

The rhythm of I Want to Be a Missionary Now is so unique!  My favorite method for teaching this Primary song is to incorporate singing time activities around that rhythm.  And what better way to do that than by knocking on doors?  Something that missionaries do quite often!

I Want to Be a Missionary Now Song History

This information comes from Stories from The Children’s Songbook by Sister Pat Graham.

Because Grietje Rowley [the author and composer] is a convert to the Church, missionary work is very important to her. She said, “I love the children and know that Heavenly Father expects them to do great things.

I wrote ‘I Want to Be a Missionary Now’ to show children how they can bring happiness to others.”  She thinks that the songs we learn in Primary can bring us joy and comfort forever.

When she writes songs, she tries to make them easy to sing, easy to play, and easy to remember.

I Want to Be a Missionary Now Lyrics and Music

Find the sheet music to I Want to Be a Missionary Now on the Church’s website.  I love its depiction of  children’s earnest desire to share the gospel:

I want to be a missionary now.
I don’t want to wait until I’m grown.
I want to share the gospel while I’m young,
For I have a testimony of my own.

I want to tell my friends about our church
And the happiness it brings to me.
I’ll tell them how the gospel was restored,
Tell them how the Book of Mormon came to be.

Then I can be a missionary now.
I don’t have to wait until I’m grown.
I’ll live each day the best that I know how,
And they’ll see I have a testimony of my own,
A testimony of my very own.
