This week in Come Follow Me, Mormon mentioned how the Nephites didn’t remember to thank God for all He had blessed them with!  I Thank Thee, Dear Father is a perfect song to teach this week to help remind us to thank Heavenly Father for “every blessing!”  Not to mention, it’s one of the suggested songs for singing time in November!

Camille's Primary Ideas: I Thank Thee Dear Father Singing Time Lesson Plan Idea

As an attention getter, discuss the 4 parts of prayer:

  • addressing Heavenly Father
  • thanking Him
  • asking Him
  • closing

To add a visual to this discussion, I modified artwork found in the nursery manual Behold, Your Little Ones HERE:

I enlarged the images to print on 4 pages.  This is better to post on the board.  You can access my printables at my Resource Library.  Instructions for accessing my Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post.

After discussing the 4 parts of prayer, play the song for the children.  Have them listen to the words to discover which category they fall under [the first verse is about thanking and the second verse is about asking].

Post words to the song as needed while you and the teachers sing (like I do HERE), use the Sing-Along App or the music found on the church’s website HERE.

Take answers and write the words on the board underneath the correct pictures.  Repeat, listening to the song until all answers are on the board:

Time permitting, have children erase a word.  Try to remember what has been erased as you sing the song.  Repeat until all words have been erased.

Bear testimony that our prayers are ways for us to express our gratitude to our Heavenly Father for all he has blessed with.  In addition, we can ask Him for things that we may stand in need of.

More Ideas:

  • There is an idea HERE that goes into more detail about prayer you might want to incorporate into your lesson plan.
  • In the song, it says “every blessing.”  Ask children to come up with ideas about something they are thankful for that falls under that category.  They can write it on the board after each time the song is sung.

All my printables are free and can be downloaded from my Resource Library.  Access to my Resource Library is sent to you via email and not linked here.  If you need initial access to my Resource Library or need access sent to you again, click on the button below, fill out your information then check your email.  Instructions for accessing each printable on my Resource Library are below the button.  Check out my email tutorial HERE for more help.
