Could I Hold the Baby Sheet Music and Lyrics
Download the sheet music to Could I Hold the Baby on the Church’s website. The lyrics make me wish I could have held the baby Jesus on that first Christmas night!
It’s Christmas Eve, I’m tucked in bed, I’m snug and warm, my prayers are said. I start to think about the first Christmas Night. The manger warm, the baby fair, the star that led the shepherds there, and what I’d say to Mary as she smiled at the little Christ child.
[CHORUS] Could I hold the baby? Will he smile at me? Does He know why He is born and what his life will be? Could I hold the baby and tell him of my love? How glad I am that Jesus Christ was sent from heaven above.
Now ev’ry day the whole year through I’ll think of all that I can do To be like Him and live as He showed me how. And I’ll remember that Christmas toys are not as dear as girls and boys, that Jesus loves each one of us endlessly. He loves you and me.

Could I Hold the Baby Singing Time Idea
Before Primary, write these words on the board in a similar fashion in groups of 3. Bolded words are the correct answers but do not bold those words on the board ;).
TIP: if your Primary is combined, assign older children help younger children with the activity.

You and the teachers sing the song. Post the words using this flip chart format as needed.

As you are singing, have children look for words written on the board that are found in the song.
Instruct the children that within each group of 3 words, 1 word is a keyword and the other 2 words are not found in the song.
Pass the “baby” eraser to a child. Sing the song again and have that child quickly come erase a word that is not found in the song. Afterward, that child must quickly pass the eraser to another child who will erase another word not found in the song, and so on.
Repeat until all the wrong words have been erased before the end of the song, leaving only the keywords. Sing again to check answers.
Eraser Pass Variations
Even though some Jr. Primary cannot read, they still enjoy an opportunity to erase the board. Assign a teacher or presidency member to help children erase the correct words.
Or another option is to draw pictures instead of words. Draw pictures to represent key words in the song while other pictures are not found in the song.
