It’s time to decorate the tree!  Well, the family tree that is!  Help children decorate their “family tree” with this singing time activity!  If you have been procrastinating putting away your Christmas tree, you’re in luck!  Use it this week to teach Family History – I Am Doing It.  But if not, don’t worry – I’ve got LOTS of options!

Camille's Primary Ideas: Family History I Am Doing It Singing Time Lesson Plan using a tree

It’s been several years since Family History – I Am Doing It was taught in singing time!  I’ve slightly modified my singing time activity for this song HERE to be home centered or virtual if you need.

The images I created can be found on my Resource Library.  Instructions for accessing my Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post.

Home Centered

You really don’t need to change much to do this activity at home!  If you need a tree, I suggest drawing one!  Either on butcher paper, a poster board or by connecting several sheets of paper with tape.  Then draw the outline of a tree and hang it on the back of a door or an open wall.

Once you have your tree, hide the clip art squares around your home.  Play the sing-along video as children find the images:

Hang the images on the tree as you listen to the song again, placing them in order.  Repeat as often as you need until all the images have been hung in order.

Afterward, have the children add to their own family tree by drawing a picture of their family to hang on the tree.  As they color, have them listen to the sing along video.

Virtual

If you need a virtual option for this song, I suggest having an empty tree displayed.  Have the images hung out of order on the wall next to the tree.  Children can figure out the next image to hang on the tree as they sing the song.  Then they can pick images to remove.

Let them then color a picture of their families that they can show to the rest of the primary.
