My family adapted my singing time lesson plan for I Want to Be a Missionary Now last summer and had so much fun!  So much so that I’m sharing what we did!

Camille's Primary Ideas: I Want to Be a Missionary Now Singing Time Idea

This song was supposed to be taught in June 2020 when we were in the middle of Covid.  Home centered singing time was still relatively new so I have no qualms with repeating this lesson plan again this year!

My original lesson plan HERE caters more to singing time at church.  But if you need a more home centered approach, keep reading!

To teach I Want to Be a Missionary Now at home, you want the kids to listen to and/or watch the sing along video of the song here:

You can also listen to the music on the church’s website HERE. Put the video or music on repeat as they color and cut out several doors:

I have 16 different doors (8 pages) available to download and print in my Resource Library. Instructions for accessing my Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post.

Once doors are decorated and cut out, place them around your dining room table like so (make sure to move all the chairs out of the way):

Missionary Knocking Activity

Play the music again and knock on each door with various activities.

  • Knock on each door to the rhythm of the song for an entire phrase.  So one door you would knock “I want to be a missionary now” then walk to the next door and knock “I don’t want to wait until I’m grown”, etc.
  • Knock on each door as you sing each word.  Then try knocking on each door after each syllable.  On the notes you hold, stop knocking and march in place for 3 counts.
  • See if you can come up with more variations (comment with your ideas)!

And if your knuckles aren’t sore after all that knocking, you probably didn’t do it right, haha!  My family had so much fun with this activity!  My kids colored for over 30 minutes!  We all had I Want to Be a Missionary Now stuck in our heads by the end of the day…a total success in my book!
