The hymn Have I Done Any Good? has such great rhythm, don’t you think?  To teach it in singing time, emphasize that energetic rhythm with some shakers!  I recommend maracas made with leftover Easter eggs (you’ll see why below!) but any type of shaker will do!

When teaching hymns, I recommend only teaching the 1st verse.  Hymns tend to be more difficult as they contain bigger words, with unfamiliar lyrics and lengthy!

So to make it easier on the kids {okay, who am I kidding? … myself!}, I focus on one verse and the chorus.  So needless to say, this lesson plan below is for the 1st verse only.  But easily incorporate the 2nd verse with this idea if you need.

Then you also need enough rhythm instruments for each child to have one such as:

  • Maracas
  • Shaker eggs
  • Plastic Easter eggs filled with beans/rice
  • Prescription bottles or small containers filled with beans/rice
  • 2 pencils to tap together
  • drums
  • any rhythm music makers you can think of!

I recommend maracas for this activity and you’ll see why down below (Amazon affiliate link):

Have I Done Any Good Singing Time Ideas

To introduce this song, have the children listen to the music as you and the teachers sing.  Post the words using this flip chart format as needed.

Camille's Primary Ideas: posting words for singing time, singing time flip charts

As the song is sung, have the Primary listen for any questions they hear.  Post the 6 question strips on the board as they are discovered:

  1. Have I done any good in the world today?
  2. Have I helped anyone in need?
  3. Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
  4. Has anyone’s burden been lighter today Because I was willing to share?
  5. Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
  6. When they needed my help was I there?

Repeat singing the song until all the questions strips are on the board and in order.  Then ask the children if they can answer “YES” to any of the questions.  Have them give quick answers if so.

Post the fill-in-the-blank page on the board as you sing the the chorus again and have the Primary help you fill in the blanks.

Then quickly discuss why serving others makes us so happy.  Shake to the rhythm as you sing Have I Done Any Good?

Now, the reason I suggest maracas, is because of this music video by Alex Boye and Carmen Rasmusen.  It brings out the rhythmic beat to this hymn which is really fun!

This music video is also on the Church’s website if you want an ad-free version.

In singing time, try contrasting how the rhythm of this version is different from the original version.  The Tabernacle choir sings an arrangement of this song here that’s more traditional to help you compare and contract the differences:

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony that we are blessed when we serve others.  Then challenge your Primary to go and serve someone this week.
