The hymn Have I Done Any Good? has such great rhythm, don’t you think?  To teach it in singing time, emphasize that energetic rhythm with some shakers!  I recommend Maracas made with leftover Easter eggs (you’ll see why below!) but any type of shaker will do!

I almost always recommend only teaching the 1st verse to hymns.  The hymns tend to be a little difficult with bigger words, unfamiliar lyrics and tend to be long songs.  So to make it easier on the kids {okay, who am I kidding? … myself!}, I focus on one verse and the chorus.  So needless to say, my lesson plan below is only for the 1st verse.  But you can easily incorporate the 2nd verse with this idea.

Attention Getter

To introduce this song, have the children listen to the music as you and the teachers sing (make sure to post words like I do HERE)

Camille's Primary Ideas: Help children and teacher sing by posting the words in singing time during your lesson plan

As the song is sung, have them listen for any questions they hear.  Write the questions on the board as they are discovered:

  • Have I done any good in the world today?
  • Have I helped anyone in need?
  • Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
  • Has anyone’s burden been lighter today Because I was willing to share?
  • Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
  • When they needed my help was I there?

Available are all the questions to be cut into strips and hung on the board.  This which might be faster than writing:

After discovering all the questions, ask the children if they can answer “YES” to any of them.  Have them give quick answers if so.

You and the teachers sing the chorus again and have the primary fill in the blank:

Activity

After the attention getter, pass out any type of shakers such as:

  • maracas
  • Easter eggs filled with beans/rice
  • prescription bottles or small containers filled with beans/rice
  • 2 pencils to tap together
  • drums
  • any rhythm music makers you can think of!

If you have more suggestions for rhythm makers, please leave a comment!  My Music Bag contains pre-made egg shakers.  If you are interested in making your own or purchasing one, find more details HERE.

Okay, so to make a maraca, check out this YouTube video:

Pass out maracas and shake along as you sing to the rhythm of Have I Done Any Good?.

Now, the reason I suggest maracas, is because of this music video by Alex Boye and Carmen Rasmusen.  It really brings out the rhythmic beat to this hymn which is really fun!

This music video is also on the church’s website HERE if you want an ad-free version.

It might be fun to contrast how the rhythm of the song is different from the original version.  The Tabernacle choir sings an arrangement of this song here that’s more traditional that you may want to shake along to:

Bear testimony that we are blessed when we serve others.  Challenge your primary to go and serve someone this week.

Home Centered

This lesson plan is easy to cater to home centered singing times as well!  Have the children make their own maracas by sharing the video above with the instructions for making their own maracas.

Suggest they shake their maracas rhythm to both videos, Alex Boye’s and the Tabernacle Choir.  They can compare and contrast the two variations of the song and also answer the questions posted above.

Make sure to challenge them to go and serve someone this week!
