Review ANY primary song with this simple yet engaging Sing the Rainbow singing time review activity! Amazingly, this activity can accommodate a home centered, virtual or in person singing time as well!

I wish I could take credit for the idea! It was liked on Facebook 250+ times. Find the original post HERE then take a minute to thank Linda for sharing!
All I did was create a printable that you can give to your home centered primary kids along with a bag of Skittles or other rainbow candy! I did simplify it it so it didn’t require dice giving more kids a chance to choose a candy.
And a shout out to Susan Fitch for the rainbow image! (More details on Susan Fitch HERE – if you aren’t using her work in singing time, you are missing out!).

Access my printables at my Resource Library. Instructions for accessing my Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post. Also available is the printable with 2 per page.
There’s a blank document available in case you need to use another type of candy and have different songs:

To edit it, I suggest adding a text box and typing in what you need. Or you can also handwrite it in before copying. I don’t have an editable document to share.
Sing the Rainbow Activity
The activity is pretty self explanatory. If you need this for home centered singing time, deliver (or pass out after sacrament meeting) the Sing the Rainbow printable along with a bag of skittles.
Simply provide a bag or jar of Skittles or other rainbow-colored candy. Children select a color and whatever color is chosen determines what song is sung:
- Red: Joseph Smith’s First Prayer Hymn #26
- Yellow: The Priesthood is Restored p. 89
- Purple: When He Comes Again p. 82
- Green: Jesus Said Love Everyone p. 61
- Orange: Have I Done Any Good? Hymn #223
*note that any song can be sung with this activity!
Draw a second piece of candy out of the jar or bag. The color chosen determines the activity to do during the song. Here are some suggestions:
- Red: Listen to the song on a faster speed
- Yellow: Stand on one leg
- Purple: Dance as the song is played
- Green: Sing every other word
- Orange: Keep the rhythm with something like a wooden spoon, shaker, bell, etc.
To do this virtually or in primary, you don’t need the worksheet. It might be fun to display on the board, however. Simply do the activity together using the piano and posting words like I do HERE.

And instead of listening to the song fast, sing it fast. You may need to let your pianist know beforehand ;).
If all the kids don’t get a turn, pass out a candy (or bag) to everyone at the end!

Thank you for the great idea! For social distancing I had each family chose between colored papers, each with a simple testimony phrase on it ie. I know Jesus loves me. They volunteered to share their testimony statement in front of the Primary, and then we sang a song related to it, putting their rainbow colored paper on the board. Together we built a rainbow on the board & gained confidence in bearing sweet, simple testimonies.
Hi Jennifer!
What a great idea!! I love your spin off of my suggested lesson plan above. It’s always nice to come up with something that will cater to your primary’s needs – well done!!
