Your primary will LOVE learning all about the tools in dad’s toolbox with this Father’s Day toolbox singing time activity! Sing Father’s Day songs, review primary presentation songs, or any other songs with this activity. In addition, it also pairs perfectly with a tool themed Father’s Day gift from the primary too!

As with any activity you choose to do in singing time, make sure you are sensitive to the situations of your primary children. If you need to, expand the activity to be a father’s, grandfather’s, uncle’s, bishop’s day toolbox too!
Denise on FB has hit it out of the park yet AGAIN! I used her Mother’s Day singing time lesson plan HERE for creating a Recipe for a Happy Mother. Then I stumbled on her Father’s Day Toolbox idea HERE and had to use it!
I simply created printables, in addition to a Father’s Day gift from the primary children using her clever poem!
Print the toolbox and tools printables then cut out. I recommend printing on card stock for a little more durability.

Access my printables at my Resource Library. Instructions for accessing my Resource Library are found at the bottom of this post.
Glue or tape the toolbox on an empty cereal box (or something similar). Or if you have the actual tools around your house, bring them along with a real toolbox.
Cut out all the tools. They will need to hang on the board. Use magnets, tape, or my recommendation (and latest obsession!) is magnetic tape (more details HERE).

Father's Day Songs
Then you need any 6 songs to sing, or 6 phrases of a song to sing. Here is my list of Father’s Day songs from The Children’s Songbook:
- Father’s Day songs to sing:
- A Happy Family p. 198
- When Grandpa Comes p. 201
- The Dearest Names p. 208
- Fathers p. 209
- Daddy’s Homecoming p. 210
- My Dad p. 211
Before primary, place all the tool printables on the board. If using actual tools, display them on a table.
Toolbox Activity
For the activity, let children (or classes, if your primary is large) pick a tool to place in the toolbox.
Read how the tool relates to the role of fathers and the associated action to perform as each tool is chosen. Sing a song from the list as you do the action:
- Hammer: My dad needs a hammer to hammer out any problems in our house. Pound out the beat using your fist into your other palm as you sing.
- Wrench: My dad needs a wrench to secure a tight family as we build our forever family. Sing with your teeth clenched.
- Level: My dad needs a level to stay well-balanced as he teaches us to choose the right. Hold arms out sideways and keep them level for the duration of the song.
- Ruler: My dad needs a ruler to keep us lined up as he follows the Holy Ghost to help lead our family. Go back and forth between smaller measurements indicating to sing softly and bigger measurements indicating to sing loudly.
- Screwdriver: My dad needs a screwdriver to turn us toward God and to tighten our relationship with Him. Turn to the right on every phrase.
- Saw: My dad needs a saw to cut away worldly temptations that would harm our family. Cut out (don’t sing) every other word as you sing.
Repeat until all tools have been placed in the toolbox and all songs have been sung.
Father's Day Gift
An optional gift to pass out at the end of singing time are these Father’s Day candy hammers! Details on creating the candy hammer are here:
I created a hammerhead printable using the suggested printable in the video HERE. Then I enlarged and colored it. All you have to do is print, cut and attach to candy handles {you’re welcome!}. Again, I recommend printing on card stock for durability. I made it so if you want to, you can attach the head on both sides of the handle (but totally optional).

For the candy handle, I recommend these 1″ x 8″ pretzel bags here (Amazon affiliate link):
Fill the bags with peanut M&M’s, chocolate dipped pretzels, etc. Then attach the My Dad’s Toolbox poem here:

Also included in my Resource Library is a version that prints 2 poems to a page.
And VOILA! A perfect Father’s Day gift from the primary kids to their fathers/father figures that coincides with your singing time lesson plan!
This is how mine turned out:

Bear Testimony
Make sure to bear testimony that you know the important role father’s play in Heavenly Father’s Plan of Salvation.
