This hymn, My Redeemer Lives is short, memorable and often overlooked.  However, your primary will easily pick it up using various pictures and names of Christ, handbells and/or some fun finger light actions!

If I had a favorite prophet, it would be President Hinckley!  He was MY prophet when I was a teenager and I love and miss him still to this day!

He wrote the words to this hymn, My Redeemer Lives. And maybe that’s why I’ve come to love it so much ;).

Most hymns I teach in singing time focus on the first verse only.  Because this hymn is so short and the 2nd verse coincides with the 1st verse so well, I’ve added it too.

I suggest singing the the 3rd verse when singing in sacrament meeting.  Add the congregation or a small musical ensemble.

Names of Christ

Colleen (who happens to be my aunt!) shared her poster HERE focusing on the names of Christ that are used in this hymn.

I replicated her fantastic idea and created these printables:

Attention Getter

As you and the teachers sing this hymn, have the children listen for the various names of Christ.  Post the words like I do HERE.

Camille's Primary Ideas: Help children and teacher sing by posting the words in singing time during your lesson plan

When children answer, give them the paper with the name they called out.  Quickly discuss why these names are used.  If some names are not called out, sing the song again until all the cards have been distributed.

Repeat again and have the children holding those cards come forward as their card is sung.  Have them stand in order.  Sing again to check the order.  Then place images on the board.

Bell Chart

Place bell chart on the board.  This bell chart uses chords on the downbeat of each measure with the exception of the ending chord.

Again, access my printables using my Resource Library (details at the bottom of this post).

If you are unfamiliar with handbells, make sure to reference my post HERE on using handbells in primary.  And more details on chording is HERE.

Using Handbells in Primary Singing Time Ideas

Pass out handbells, ring, sing and repeat!

Finger Lights

If your primary doesn’t own handbells or you have more time, use the finger light actions that Virginia shared here:

The actions can also be done with glow sticks or without finger lights (that just isn’t quite as fun!).  Find more details on finger lights HERE.  They are a very versatile and inexpensive prop to use in singing time!

This video also incorporates the 3rd verse so if you want to teach it, these actions are great!
