Teach Dearest Mother, I Love You in singing time around Mother’s Day!  Your primary children will love figuring out which picture is their mother!  Then take those pictures and create a customized Mother’s Day gift!  This singing time lesson plan can be used with ANY Primary song (Mother’s Day themed or not!).

Camille's Primary Ideas: Dearest Mother, I Love You Mother's Day singing time ideas

This activity can be used with ANY primary song!  Whether it’s a Mother’s Day song or not!

Pictures of Mothers

For this activity, gather pictures of all the primary children’s mother’s (or equivalent caregiver).  The younger the photo is of the mother, the better!

TIP: try finding photos shared on social media accounts.

Mother's Day Gift Option

Print as 5×7 photo prints to be included as a Mother’s Day gift {see below}. Each child will need a print of their mother so if there are siblings, make sure each sibling receives their own photo of their mother.

Print all the pictures of the moms of your primary children to display on the board.

Mother's Day Singing Time Idea

As you and the teachers sing Dearest Mother, I Love You, have the children figure out whose mom each picture is. Post the words as needed.

Repeat until all pictures have been discovered. Write the child’s name under his/her mom’s picture.

Then teach the following actions:

  • Gentle words: place forefinger on lips.
  • Hear you say: cup hand behind ear.
  • Kind hands: hold up hands
  • You’re my mother: point away from yourself
  • Dearest mother, I love you: hug yourself.

Place the mom and the children on opposite sides of the board. Gradually bring the two together on the board using magnets or tape when all the children know the words and are singing well.

Dearest Mother, I Love You Handbell Chart

Or optionally, pass out handbells and play using this handbell chart.

This is also available to download in the Resource Library.

The handbell chart is for the melody so it’s really simple and great if you are unfamiliar with using handbells.

Make sure to check out this post HERE with more details about using handbells in singing time.
