Make sure to celebrate the pioneers in singing time this summer! The pioneers are a part of our Church’s history and heritage so wherever you live, incorporate pioneer songs from the Children’s Songbook using some or all of these pioneer singing time ideas!

Pioneer Primary Summer Activity
There are WAY too many ideas to incorporate into one Sunday. That said, if you put several or most of these ideas together, they create an EPIC pioneer Primary summer activity! Simply create stations for each of the Primary children to visit!
Don’t miss the customizable invitation for your next pioneer Primary party! Scroll down to find more details!
Pioneer Cake Walk
Create a simple cake walk as the Primary sings Pioneer Children Sang As They Walked. Find more details HERE.

Homemade Butter
Your Primary will LOVE making and eating homemade butter on crackers! Find more details HERE for making it!

Cross the Sweetwater River
Okay, not really but you can easily create a similar experience! Provide a big bucket of icy water. Then tell the story about the boys who sacrificed their lives to help members in their party cross the freezing Sweetwater river. Find more details HERE.

Wagon Wheel of Fortune
This new spin on an old game will have your Primary rolling {see what I did there?}. Find more details HERE.

Tug of War
Children will enjoy playing games similar to what the pioneers played! Like tug of war! Sing The Handcart Song as you play! Find more details HERE.

Pioneer Gear
Do most of your Primary children own primary clothing? Hardly any of ours do and I’m going to assume your Primary is similar! So why not have them make their own using simple brown paper bags? Check out more details HERE for making “authentic” pioneer pinafores and vests!

Covered Wagon Races
Children will enjoy making their own covered wagons then racing them against each other! Then why not race to the Primary song, Covered Wagons? Find more details HERE.

Create paper cup covered wagons with the following supplies:
- Card stock or construction paper cut into 3.5 x 4.5 inch rectangles (use attached optional Base Template in Resource Library)
- 2 small (bath) paper cups
- 1 coffee stirrer straw – cut in half
- 1 regular straw
- 4 life savers candy
- Tape
Fold the long sides of the rectangles about ½ inch to create the base. Tape the bottom of the cups together and place in the base. Tape the cups to the base.
Then tape 2 halves of one coffee stirrer straw on the bottom of the base to create an axel. Add the candy to the ends of the axel for the wheels. Tape the end of the straws or hot glue pieces of a regular straw to create a “cap” so the candy doesn’t come off but so the candy still freely rotates.

Create wagon races by having racers blow into the cup using a straw to make it move. Draw a start and finish line using chalk on the sidewalk or tape on the floor if indoors.
Pioneer Trek Singo
Another simple activity is to play pioneer trek singo! Find more details HERE.

Pioneer Trek
Or create a pioneer trek complete with pioneer stories that occurred along the way! Find more details HERE.

Pioneer Primary Song Chime Charts
Create music similar to how the pioneers would have created it by singing all the pioneer songs in the Children’s Songbook using chimes! I’ve created a chime (or handbell) chart for EVERY pioneer song in the songbook! Find more details HERE.
