History of The Church of Jesus Christ Song
This information comes from Stories from The Children’s Songbook by Sister Pat Graham.
The Children’s Songbook Committee felt it would be helpful to have a song containing the name of the Church so that children could practice the name correctly.
Janice Perry filled our request in an interesting way. She said she was taking a nap one afternoon and awoke with the strong impression that there should be a song containing the full name of the Church. She knew the songs for the new Primary songbook had already been selected, but she began writing anyway.
She completed a two-verse song and sent it to the committee. We were thrilled and suggested a few ideas that we had thought of, and asked if she could make some adjustments.
We had hoped to include some of the ideas in the three-fold mission of the Church, which had recently been introduced.
In the end, the song had one verse and began just the way Janice first wrote it, “I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Ideas for teaching "I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ" Song
1. Scavenger Hunt
Send your Primary on a scavenger hunt through the building, outside or remain in the Primary room. They will love hunting for various phrases of this song that relate to spaces found at church!
2. Paper Actions
It doesn’t get any simpler than this! Just pass out folded strips of paper to create these clever paper actions for teaching The Church of Jesus Christ in singing time! This might just become my new favorite method to teach this song!
3. Build a Church Building
I love what March 2021 Friend magazine suggests for building a church building.
Write phrases of the song on different building pieces and build them in order! Even easier, write the phrases on large strips of paper and build your church building on the board using tape or magnets!
4. Additional 2nd Verse
If your Primary KNOWS this song, don’t skip the 2nd verse of The Church of Jesus Christ!! This will easily become a Primary favorite if you do!
FYI … it’s not in the Children’s Songbook. So if you teach it, make sure to get it approved by your bishop.
