My Heavenly Father Loves Me: Lyrics and Sheet Music
Find the sheet music to My Heavenly Father Loves Me on the Church’s website. The vivid lyrics make me grateful for all I have:
Whenever I hear the song of a bird Or look at the blue, blue sky, Whenever I feel the rain on my face Or the wind as it rushes by, Whenever I touch a velvet rose Or walk by our lilac tree, I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world Heav’nly Father created for me.
He gave me my eyes that I might see The color of butterfly wings. He gave me my ears that I might hear The magical sound of things. He gave me my life, my mind, my heart: I thank him rev’rently For all his creations, of which I’m a part. Yes, I know Heav’nly Father loves me.
Did you know there’s a 3rd verse published on the Church’s website? The lyrics are all about the Savior:
Whenever I think of the Savior’s hands in prayer at Gethsemane, Whenever I picture Him healing the lame or causing the blind to see, Whenever I think how He willingly gave His perfect life for me, I marvel as gratitude swells in my heart, for I know heav’nly Father loves me. Yes, I know, I know, yes, I know Heav’nly Father loves me.

My Heavenly Father Loves Me Song History
This information comes from Stories from The Children’s Songbook by Sister Pat Graham.
Words and music: Clara McMaster (1904-1995) LDS
Clara McMaster was the eleventh child in her family and sang and accompanied others on the piano as she grew up in Brigham City, Utah.
She said, “I’m grateful that as a child we had an orchestra, and a chorus in our family. It was easy because we had no radios, TV, or movies.
I was born on a farm, and I knew the sounds in the barnyard. When I was called to the Primary general board, I was told that the children needed a song to teach them that their Heavenly Father loves them.
I didn’t really know how to do that. The Lord answered my prayers through the song of a bird. All I would have to do to write this song was to bear my testimony.
This was my way of saying to the children that my Heavenly Father loves me. It wasn’t my song. It was something brought into my heart many years ago. I’m grateful that the children still want to sing my song.”
The beginning pitch of the song was raised an octave to help children sing in their head voices.
Because Sister McMaster and her husband performed duets often, she naturally wrote memorable melodies that were easy to harmonize.
The melody for the words “I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world” was incorrectly notated as an ascending scale in Sing With Me.
It was originally written as it now appears, with optional cue notes that may be sung by high voices or played by the piano.
