I love to occasionally switch things up in Primary!  And with this activity, having children sit on the floor as you read to them a story is a simple change that’s easy to implement and garners great results!

The story by President Monson in the storybook is from the October 2013 Friend magazine entitled Dare to Stand Alone.

The flip chart comes from OCD Primary Chorister and the illustration of President Monson is from Susan Fitch.

Print the storybook double-sided on card stock.  Place in sheet protectors and then in a 3-ring binder.

I Believe in Being Honest Singing Time Idea

Before Primary, inform the pianist that you will be stopping at the end of various phrases throughout the song:

  • Phrase 1: I believe in being honest; I believe in being true,
  • Phrase 2: that honesty should start with me in all I say, in all I do.
  • Phrase 3: I’ll form good habits in my youth, To keep my word, to tell the truth,
  • Phrase 4: To speak up in defending right And keep my name and honor bright.
  • Phrase 5: I believe in being honest; I believe in being true,
  • Phrase 6: That honesty should start with me In all I say, in all I do.

Children can sit on the floor around you as you read the book (optional).  When you come to the phrases of the song, you, teachers and any children who want to, sing them with the piano.  Then continue reading the story as you turn the pages.

After completing reading the book, sing the entire song again.  Discuss how President Monson showed honesty and how it blessed the lives of those around him.

Afterward, sing the entire song, posting the words using this flip chart format as needed (or quickly flip through the pages, skipping over the story).

Directive Listening Questions

Additionally, each time you sing, use one of the following questions and have the children listen for the answer; then have them sing that phrase.

  • Listen for another phrase that has almost the same rhythm as “I believe in being honest.” What is it? [I believe in being true]
  • Do these phrases remind you of an article of faith? [you or a child can read the 13th article of faith]
  • What word rhymes with honesty? [me]
  • When should it start with me? [in all I say, in all I do]
  • Name 4 habits that help us to be honest. [KEEP my word, TELL the truth, SPEAK up in defending right, KEEP my name and honor bright]
  • When should I form good habits? [in my youth]
  • Find 3 sets of rhyming words [true-do, youth-truth, right-bright]

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony of the importance of being honest and true at all times.  You are not only blessing yourself, but sometimes the lives of others.

More I Believe in Being Honest Singing Time Ideas

Sarah shared her idea to use the “2 Truths and a Lie” game to teach I Believe in Being Honest.  Simply take 2 correct words or phrases from this song, and add a 3rd, incorrect word or phrase.  For example:

  1. I believe in being honest (this is a truth)
  2. I believe in being true (this is a truth)
  3. I believe in being rude (this is the lie)

Then sing the correct phrases after they are found.  Repeat with 2 more correct phrases and an incorrect phrase until the entire song has been sung.
