I Will Be Valiant Song History

This information comes from Stories from The Children’s Songbook by Sister Pat Graham .

Vanja Watkins [the author and composer] was asked to write the Valiant class song…

Sister Watkins prayed and fasted and agonized over the words. A few couplets came, but she needed a good beginning.

She walked into her bedroom and noticed a paper on her dresser with a quotation from Joseph Fielding Smith. She read, “Our young people are among the most blessed and favored of our Father’s children. Their spirits have been reserved to come forth in this day when the gospel is on earth, and when the Lord needs valiant servants to carry on his great Latter-day work.”

She wept as she recognized the answer to her prayer. These words were the first line she needed, and they had been given to her in this quotation.

She felt it was a little miracle, because no one in the family knew how the precious paper got on her dresser.
