Camille's Primary Ideas: Paper Band Singing Time Review activity

I love that this activity can be done last-minute!  We all have those Sundays where we didn’t have time to plan much for singing time but still want to pull off a stellar activity!  Well, look no further!

The original idea is from A Primary Singing Time that I’ve modified so be sung with ANY song.

Paper Band Paper

If you have time, I recommend grabbing some fun colored paper!  But, ANY paper will do – printer, notebook, newspaper, construction, etc.

I purchased this scrapbook paper from Walmart.  I thought the kids would enjoy the vibrant colors and it was fairly inexpensive.  Not to mention, I can use it for many more projects ;).

Paper Band Singing Time Idea

First, select songs to sing.  They can be something seasonal, Primary program songs to review, personal favorites, whatever!

Post the words using this flip chart format as needed for any of your songs.

Camille's Primary Ideas: posting words for singing time, singing time flip charts

Pass out a plain sheet of paper to each child.  Post words as needed to any songs you are reviewing.  Do the following actions with the sheet of paper as you sing each song (or verses to songs):

  1. Roll the paper into a tube:  ‘Toot’ a phrase, then sing the next, alternating for the duration of the song.  Repeat again, alternating which phrases were sung and which were ‘tooted.’
  2. ‘Snap’ the paper (without tearing it): Hold the sheet loosely and then pull it taut to the rhythm of the song.
  3. Slap, tickle or rub: Put the paper on your lap and have the children follow you as you slap it, tickle it, or rub it to make different noises with each phrase.
  4. Clap to the beat: With the paper in between your hands with palms together; try to keep the paper airborne between claps.
  5. Crumple & Fold: Crumple the paper then unfold it on certain words or to the rhythm.
  6. Tear: Start at one edge and tear strips off, until paper is all torn up and on the floor.
  7. Clean up: Pass around the garbage can and clean up all the papers before the song ends.

And that’s it!  SO simple and SO fun!
