I love that children get to use their hearing sense with this singing time idea!  Because what better way to hear the Holy Ghost than to sit quietly and listen for it?

Create Listening Sounds

For this activity, you need to create a plethora of various sounds that children will recognize.  For instance:

  • Egg shaker
  • Duck caller
  • Phone ringtone
  • Handbell or chime
  • Whistle or kazoo
  • Toy clapper
  • Bounce a ball
  • Click a pen
  • Jingle coins in a bag or keys
  • Flip through the pages of a book
  • Jingle bells
  • Pop balloons (4 needed)
  • Bike horn
  • Electric drill
  • Handheld mixer (battery operated)
  • Pound a hammer
  • Tambourine/drum/triangle
  • Canned air
  • White noise machine
  • Party favor blowers
  • Crumple or rip paper
  • Pour water from one cup to another
  • Scratch a chalkboard (ooh … cringy!)
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Stapler stapling
  • Etc.

What other common sounds can you easily create? Leave a comment with your ideas and suggestions and I’ll update this list!

I may or may not have purchased this duck caller for this activity – I just couldn’t resist! (Amazon affiliate link).

Or, you can even play a YouTube video containing various sounds like these here:

The Still Small Voice Singing Time Idea

To start, you need to create some type of barrier so children can’t see what you’re using to make the sounds (unless you are playing the videos from a phone + speaker). Something like a trifold poster board, an open cardboard box or something similar.

Post the words using this format as needed as you and the teachers sing the song.

Camille's Primary Ideas: posting words for singing time, singing time flip charts

When you sing all the “listen” words (sung 4 times) found in the song, don’t sing them and have the piano stop playing during those notes as well.  Instead, create a sound to the rhythm using one of the sound items (or play the sound from the video).

Once the sound is guessed, repeat singing and creating a new sound when the word “listen” is sung.  Keep repeating until all the sound objects are heard and guessed.

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony that we hear the spirit in a variety of ways! But we have to be listening in order to hear it.
