It’s not often we hear other sounds in singing time other than music!  That said, I recommend giving the Name That Sound singing time activity mentioned below a try!

The Still Small Voice Song History

This information comes from Stories from The Children’s Songbook by Sister Pat Graham.

With the exception of this song and [a few others], all other songs in the book have chord symbols (C, F, G7, etc.) above the melody line. Simplified chording, however, could not capture the unique sound of the modal accompaniment.

Dr. Bradshaw [the composer] preferred no chord symbols rather than simplified chording.

The Still Small Voice Lyrics and Music

Find the sheet music to The Still Small Voice on the Church’s website.  This Primary song’s lyrics beautifully describe the role of the Holy Ghost:

Through a still small voice, the Spirit speaks to me To guide me, to save me from the evil I may see. If I try to do what’s right, he will lead me thru the night, Direct me, protect me, and give my soul his light. Listen, listen. The Holy Ghost will whisper. Listen, listen to the still small voice.

3. Listen Using Chimes or Handbells

I recommend using the softer tone of chimes as opposed to handbells when playing for The Still Small Voice. However, handbells work just as well too!  This partial handbell chart only plays a few key notes found in the song!

If you set the required chimes out on small pieces of foam, they act like a xylophone.  This way you can play them all yourself!  Check out this video in order to do so:

Play the notes in the chart and let children guess what words you played on the chimes.  Then pass out the chimes and let them each take a turn playing a chime!

Make sure to check out more details for using chimes in singing time.
