Camille's Primary Ideas: I Believe in Christ Primary singing time idea song story

Relating songs to stories makes the songs more relevant to children!  Then magic happens when the story is relatable to the child!  Thus helping children connect to the song through the story.

What is a Song Story?

Sharla Dance describes song stories as:

…one of the best ways to draw a child into the message and the feelings of the song.

Stories convey emotions and context in a strong way to the children. This activity helps the children connect emotions and context to a song, and often invites the Holy Ghost into the room.

In a nutshell, a song story is a story that relates to the message of the song.  As you read, occasionally stop and sing phrases found in the song.

I Believe in Christ Singing Time Idea

Read this story (thank you ChatGPT for the inspiration!).  When phrases from the hymn are sung, stop and sing them.  Optionally, invite teachers and the Primary to sing with you.  Post the words using this flip chart format as needed.

Camille's Primary Ideas: posting words for singing time, singing time flip charts

In the small town beneath the towering peaks of the mountains, lived a boy named Ethan. Ethan was a bright-eyed, curly-haired nine-year-old who loved spending time with his family and playing in the backyard with his little sister, Lily.

Sing: I believe in Christ, He is my king!

Every Sunday morning, Ethan eagerly woke up, knowing it was time to go to church. His family belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Ethan loved going to church and learning about Jesus Christ and His teachings.

Sing: With all my heart to him I’ll sing;

One sunny Sunday, as Ethan sat in sacrament meeting with his family, he listened about stories from the scriptures. His favorite story was about when Jesus Christ fed the multitude with just a few loaves of bread and fish. Ethan imagined himself sitting on the grassy hillside, watching in wonder as Jesus performed miracles.

Sing: I’ll raise my voice in praise and joy,

Afterward, Ethan joined his friends in Primary. They sang songs about Jesus and learned that Jesus is Heavenly Father’s son and that He was sent to earth so we could return to Heavenly Father. This made Ethan feel closer to Jesus.

Sing: In grand amens my tongue employ

At home, Ethan often found himself thinking about what he could do to be more like Jesus. He remembered how Jesus had been kind to everyone, especially those who were hurting or lonely. Ethan decided he would try harder to help his friends and family, just like Jesus would.

Sing: I believe in Christ; he is God’s Son.

One afternoon, as Ethan played in the backyard with Lily, he noticed their elderly neighbor, Mr. Thompson, struggling to carry groceries into his house. Without hesitation, Ethan ran over to help. He smiled brightly as Mr. Thompson thanked him, feeling a warm glow inside his heart. He knew that by helping others, he was showing his love for Jesus Christ.

Sing: On earth to dwell his soul did come.

As Ethan grew older, his understanding of his faith deepened. He learned more about Jesus Christ’s life and teachings and how he could apply them in his own life. Whether it was being kind to a classmate who felt left out or standing up for what was right, Ethan always tried to follow Jesus’s example.

Sing: He healed the sick; the dead he raised.

One evening, as Ethan knelt by his bed to say his prayers, he thanked Heavenly Father for sending Jesus Christ to earth. He felt grateful for his family, his friends, and the opportunity to learn and grow in his faith. With a peaceful heart, Ethan climbed into bed, knowing that no matter what happened, he could always rely on Jesus Christ for strength and guidance.

Sing: Good works were his; his name be praised.

In the quiet of his room, Ethan drifted off to sleep, dreaming of a world where everyone knew and loved Jesus Christ as much as he did.

Bear Testimony

Bear testimony that just like Ethan, we can grow our testimony of Jesus Christ by attending church, reading stories in the scriptures and serving others.
