New hymns from the Church’s Hymns-For Home and Church have been released! Get familiar with them, then gear up because this affects what we’ll eventually be teaching in singing time!

Camille's Primary Ideas: New Hymns for Home and Church

The first 13 hymns are now available on the Church’s Music Library and Gospel Library app with LOTS more coming!

“These new hymns should be used immediately,” said President Susan H. Porter, general president of the Primary.

I’m so happy to see a few familiar songs on here already!  It eases my apprehension about learning and teaching an entire new songbook! Here’s the list of the 13 hymns:

Sabbath & Weekday

Easter & Christmas

The hymns chosen in the hymnbook have priorities set by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:

Hymns must teach core doctrine with clarity; increase faith in, and worship of, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ; comfort the weary; inspire church members to endure in faith; invite joyful sing and home and in church; and unify members around the world.

The next batch of hymns is said to be released in September 2024, with additional digital batches every few months until the hymnbook is completed in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French in 2026.  By 2030, all the hymns will be translated into some 50 languages.

How to Become Familiar with the New Hymns

To become more familiar with all these new hymns, I suggest the following:

  • Play them from the Church’s Gospel Library app to listen to when you are driving, washing dishes preparing for church or any other time!
  • Print the sheet music and play them on a musical instrument including the piano, guitar (they all have chording!!), ukulele, violin, etc.
  • Sing them at church!  Do as Sister Porter suggests and incorporate them at church immediately, any way you can!  In sacrament meeting and singing time!

Also make sure to read this article on the Church’s website containing several videos with more details!

Are you Familiar with Any of the New Hymns?

Out of the list of 13, I’m familiar with:

  • Come, Thou Fount
  • I Will Walk with Jesus
  • Gethsemane
  • What Child Is This?
  • Star Bright

I have fond memories of my dad singing Star Bright when I was a child.  I’ve even taught Gethsemane, and I Will Walk with Jesus in singing time!   And I can’t wait to learn the rest!
