Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth Song History
My favorite for teaching this hymn is by folding an origami house as you teach each phrase! The folding is as simple as the song!

This excerpt comes from Our Latter-Day Hymns: The Stories and the Messages by Karen Lynn Davidson.
The text, newly created for the 1985 hymnbook, echoes the teachings of our prophets – that prayer, kindness, family home evening, service, scripture study, and other spiritual building blocks are basic to a happy family life.
Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth Lyrics and Music
Find the sheet music to Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth on the Church’s website. I love its depiction of children’s earnest desire to share the gospel:
- Home can be a heav’n on earth When we are filled with love, Bringing happiness and joy, Rich blessings from above— Warmth and kindness, charity, Safety and security— Making home a part of heaven, Where we want to be.
- Drawing fam’ly near each week, We’ll keep love burning bright. Serving Him with cheerful hearts, We’ll grow in truth and light. Parents teach and lead the way, Children honor and obey, Reaching for our home in heaven, Where we want to stay.
- Praying daily in our home, We’ll feel His love divine; Searching scriptures faithfully, We’ll nourish heart and mind. Singing hymns of thanks, we’ll say, “Father, help us find the way Leading to our home in heaven, Where we long to stay.”

3. Wordstrips
The June 2004 Friend magazine has a song presentation for Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth using wordstrips:
Song Presentation:“Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth” (Hymns, no. 298). Before Primary, place the following four clues and seven wordstrips under the children’s chairs.(Clues: 1. When people think of me, they think of love. 2. I am a place where you find kindness and charity. 3. I am a place where you feel safety, security, happiness, and joy. 4. I am a place where we want to be.Wordstrips: LOVE, KINDNESS, CHARITY, SAFETY, SECURITY, HAPPINESS, and JOY.) Prepare one wordstrip with the words HOME and HEAVEN to use later.Invite the children to look under their chairs for clues to the message of the song. As they read their clues, place the keywords in random order on the board.Sing the first line of the song; then have a child place the keyword(s) for that line in the order you sang them. Sing the line together, and listen to see if the order is correct. Repeat with the other three lines of the first verse until you have all the keywords in the correct order.Hold the HOME and HEAVEN word strip so it does not face the children and give them the last clue: “I start with the letter ‘H.’ How many think the answer to this clue is HEAVEN? How many think it is HOME? [Show word strip.] It is both HOME and HEAVEN!”Sing the song, and ask the children to sing the answers HOME and HEAVEN more loudly than the other words of the song. Repeat until the children have learned the song.Bear testimony that when we show kindness, charity, and love to our family, we make our home like heaven here on earth.

5. Sharla Dance
Sharla Dance has a scarf and egg shaker. While it’s for Reverence Is Love, it also works PERFECTLY with Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth!
Pass out a scarf and egg shaker to each child. The pattern is simple: circle twice with the scarf then shake the egg shaker 3 times. Here’s how it fits into the song:
- Home can be a: circle twice
- heaven on earth: shake 3 times
- when we are filled with: circle twice
- love: shake 3 times
- bringing happi-: circle twice
- -ness and joy: shake 3 times
- rich blessings from a-: circle twice
- -bove: shake 3 times
- warmth and kindness: circle twice
- charity: shake 3 times
- safety and sec-: circle twice
- -urity: shake 3 times
- making home a-: circle twice
- -part of heaven: shake 3 times
- where we want to: circle twice
- stay: shake 3 times
Then the fun comes when you have them switch hands by holding the scarf in the opposite hand and the egg shaker in the other hand. Then repeat! It totally works their brains in true Sharla fashion!
