Invite your Primary to match the melody of their song to the notes on the board with this melody match-up Primary singing time review idea! They’ll strengthen their song skills and pick up a little music theory! A total WIN-WIN!
A good friend of mine, Mindy, shared her original idea with me. She said:
I made another “crack the code” option – but using rhythm cards. They were suggested in “A Children’s Songbook Companion” but without visuals, so this is what I envisioned rhythm cards to look like!
The rhythm cards are out of order from the song. We first learned how to clap each of the notes, and THEN they learn how to clap out each rhythm card. Then we sing it and they try to find it in the song.
Her code is for Search, Ponder, and Pray. I LOVED her idea but wanted to be able to incorporate it into ANY song. So this is what I came up with!
There are several variations to this activity to make it as simple or as challenging as you need! For younger Primaries who need a simpler challenge (or if you are less familiar with music theory), print this page only:
NOTE: Print enough copies of this page as there are notes found in the melody of your song. Example: Dare to Do Right contains 58 notes in the melody. It requires 58 notes or 5 pages of these notes and discarding 2
For older Primaries who need a bigger challenge, print any of the other pages (and enough copies) that contain notes found in the Primary music you wish to review:
**If you need whole notes, cut off the stems of the half notes.

Print on card stock, laminate and cut out. Then I recommend using magnetic tape on the back. But tape or magnets will work too.
Before Primary, arrange the number of quarter notes in your song on the board in a straight line (or create multiple lines as needed). Optional to draw in the measure lines (best if using the more difficult variation) with chalk or a dry erase marker.
Have the Primary sing the song, posting the words using this flip chart format as needed.
Show them how to move the notes up or down depending on how the pitch changes in the song (similar to notes on a musical staff). Have them move their hand (or use sticks or unsharpened pencils) to pitch lead as you sing that mimics the notes’ position on the board.
Choose a few children to come to the board to raise and lower several measures of the notes as they are sung. Repeat with new children until all the notes are in the correct position.
Continue pitch leading with hands or pencils. Once correct, repeat with new songs and new children.
For added levels of difficulty, use the various note types. Optionally add them in place once the melody is determined.
Or place all the notes out of order (either within each measure or randomly throughout the entire song) and children must determine where the correct notes belong in the song.
