I wrote a little march-like ditty a year or so ago, but had no idea how to use it… but I thought it might make a fun Primary song. While thinking about it while I was in the celestial room, the words started coming. I like it – it’s catchy and quite simple.
The lyrics really are catchy AND simple!
I’m going to follow Jesus Christ today. I want to be like Him in ev’ry way. If I do what’s right, He will send His light As I read, pray, ponder, and obey.
I can be clean, brave, reverent, and kind. I can serve Him with body, soul, and mind. As a child of God, hold the iron rod And give charity to all mankind.
I can bear testimony pure and true, Be an example, do what He would do. I’ll proclaim the truth though I’m in my youth, So my friends can hear the gospel too.

Here are a few simple ideas for teaching it in singing time:
Pick a child to be the “leader.” Everyone copies their simple action (clap, snap, march, sway arms, stomp, fold arms, etc.) as you sing through the verse.
Between each verse, switch leaders.
Cut out yellow “sunbeams.” On each, write one of the key words: read, pray, ponder, obey.
As you sing, place them on the board in a path leading to a picture of Christ.
Pass out a long rope or large stick (for a “rod”) and let a few children hold it while you sing the 2nd verse.
Talk briefly about how holding to the rod keeps us safe and close to Christ.
Let children take turns holding it while you sing again.
Cut out paper hearts with service actions written on them (share, help, listen, smile, comfort, include).
Toss a heart to a child while you sing “give charity to all mankind.”
Have the child quickly act out or say how they’d do that service action.
On the board, write the phrase “I can bear testimony…”
Invite children to add simple testimony starters: I know Jesus loves me. I know prayer works. I know the scriptures are true.
Sing the 3rd verse after each addition to reinforce how their testimonies shine.
Add simple hand motions for keywords:
Follow: walk in place
Light: fingers wiggle upward like shining
Iron rod: hold both hands like a rod
Charity: arms out in a hug
Bear testimony: point to heart, then outward
Sing slowly, then faster, allowing the children to try and keep up
