Camille's Primary Ideas: How Did the Savior Minister Primary singing time ideas

I ABSOLUTELY love using simplified signs, especially around Easter!  I’m not exactly sure why, maybe it’s the simplicity of the signs that elevates the message of the song.

But when I came across this song in the batch of new Hymns for Home and Church, I knew it would be a great one to learn for Easter using some signs!

Signing in Singing Time

If you are new to using simplified signs in singing time, I HIGHLY suggest you check out using signs in singing time.  It walks you through how I come up with, demonstrate and teach signs in singing time.

Simplified Signs

Well before singing time, practice the simplified signs so you know them.  Reference these notes to use as your guide:

CHORUS:

I want to live as Jesus did:

And serve in loving ways:

He showed how I can minister as a child in latter days.

VERSE 1:

How did the Savior minister?

He served with gentle hands.

And I can also use my hands,

Helping others when I can.

VERSE 2:

How did the Savior minister?

He was a friend to all.

  • All: both arms with hands extended sweep outward

And I can also be a friend,

Lifting others when they fall.

VERSE 3:

How did the Savior minister?

He prayed for all with love.

I’ll pray for others lovingly,

Seeking blessings from above.

How Did the Savior Minister Singing Time Idea

Demonstrate the song using sign language and no singing as the piano plays.  It brings in a neat spirit – try it!  Afterwards, ask the children what signs they remember and take answers.

After the demonstration, teach each sign, gradually adding on.  Begin with the chorus.  Once a phrase is learned, sing and sign it.  Repeat until all the signs have been learned and sung the song several times.  Post the words using this flip chart format as needed.

  1. Your demonstration video has verse three, but this post doesn’t outline verse 3 like you do for verse one and 2 above.

Teaching this to the kiddos to sing in sacrament! They always love the simplified sign language, so they’ll be excited. Thank you for this!

    1. Hi Erika!
