Bring the fun of a backyard cookout into singing time with this summer barbecue Primary singing time review! It’s an easy, interactive review activity that’s perfect for summertime.
Allison shared her summer barbecue on the PML Facebook group and I absolutely LOVED the idea! With this activity, sing or review ANY songs, or use the suggested list of Primary songs below!
This is my variation, complete with printables! In order to accommodate LOTS of turns, I’ve modified it slightly so most (if not all) of your Primary kiddos can have a turn.
For this activity, print this 6-page barbecue clip art printable that contains 21 food items you’d find at a barbecue:

Print on card stock, cut out, laminate and add magnetic tape or use magnets or tape.
On the back of the meat items, write a song to sing. Choose 7 songs you need to review, choose from this list of Primary songs, or mix and match:
On the back of the side dish items, write who should sing:
On the back of the dessert items, write fun ways to sing:
Optionally, set up the room to resemble a barbecue by bringing the following:
Before Primary, set a table with the table cloth, place the wire rack, cooler and dessert tray on the table. Place the meat items on the rack, the side dish items in the cooler, the dessert items on the tray. Put on the apron.
Choose 3 children to come choose a food item from the grill, the cooker and the serving tray.
TIP: for large Primaries, let each class collectively decide on an item to choose.
Read the instructions on the back and place the chosen items on the board. Sing the chosen song with the movement activity and the group chosen. Use the spatula to lead the singing. Post the words using this flip chart format as needed.
Repeat with new children and new food items until all the items have been chosen and each child has had a turn to come forward.
Optionally: Allow children to lead the singing with the spatula while wearing the apron.

This was a great activity! So fun and engaging. I made a few changes that worked well for my primary! I came with trays to present the food cut- outs, but when I was setting up I thought it would be more fun to draw simple trays on the whiteboard, and hang the food up with magnets. It gave the kids something fun to look at, and they could decide what they might like to pick, making the decisions quicker.
I started the lesson inviting the children to my bbq, and showed them the feast I have prepared! But after this meal, they would eventually be hungry again! I then showed the scripture Isaiah 55:1-2. I shared that the Savior can offer bread and water that will make you never hunger again. I bore my testimony of this truth at the end of the lesson. Thanks for the great resource!

Thank you for the idea! If we are going to use this as a review of songs, how do I get to the printed songs in my notebook quickly. Especially since I don’t know what song they are going to choose. My notebook is full of songs.

You’re so welcome! If you have a binder full of songs, I’d either put the songs you’re reviewing at the very front of the binder so they’re easy to quickly flip to, or, I like to add tabs (either using sticky tabs or post-it notes) to the bottom of the page protector with the song title so I can quickly flip to that song. I hope that helps.

Another question, how would you utilize the items in the cooler if the primary is very small? We have only 6-10 children.
If you’re Primary is too small to split up the children singing (like only boys or only girls), maybe create groups instead but everyone still sings. So everyone wearing yellow moves to the left side of the room and everyone not wearing yellow moves to the right side of the room. And everyone still sings, or one side sings one phrase and the other side sings the next phrase, etc. Another group would be boy/left, girls/ right, teachers/left, all children/right. And everyone still sings. So the activity is picking groups instead of choosing who sings. I hope that helps :).
